Auvergne Essentials

The best roads

Auvergne is a bikers' paradise! Volcanoes, rivers and valleys have shaped a truly breathtaking landscape, home to some sensational roads, which are located amongst the mountains and especially in Le Sancy. Cruising along the roads of the Col de la Croix Morand or the Croix Saint-Robert (3 Days Circuit "Water, earth, fire,... Volcanoes"), time seems to stand still.

The Pas de Peyrol and the Route des Crêtes are musts for all bikers in Auvergne (2 Days Circuit "Cantal's most beautiful villages route" and 2 Days Circuit "The mountain pass route"). Closer to Clermont-Ferrand lies the Gergovie plateau, where you can enjoy views over the city, with the Puy de Dôme in the background (3 Days Circuit "The wild plains from le Cézallier to le Forez").

And if you're after some cooler driving locations which are closer to rivers , or drive beneath the Garabit viaduct, which straddles the Truyère River in Cantal, and which was built by Gustave Eiffel.

And finally, you shouldn't miss the Gorges de l’Allier in Haute-Loire, where you'll find little roads looking out over the river (2 Days Circuit "The white water circuit").

Towns worth visiting:

Clermont Ferrand, at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys (3 Days Circuit "The wild plains from le Cézallier to le Forez"), is a dynamic city in which culture and history come together harmoniously. In Le Puy en Velay (3 Days Circuit "The Haute-Loire circuit"), where you'll find St James' Way, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in Moulins (3 Days Circuit "Mountains and energy in Allier"), listed as a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (town of art and history), you're sure to come across some locations that will make your trip even more rewarding.

Wellness and water cures:

For a really pleasant break, the various spa towns in Auvergne have modern aqua-recreation centres, four of which the Grande Boucle passes through: Vichy, Le Mont-Dore, La Bourboule and Chaudes-Aigues.
